open Open source community

Learn about supporting an open source community at this upcoming conference.

I am pleased to share that I will be a plenary speaker at DevFestMN, on Saturday, December 6.

Sponsored by Google, DevFestMN is one of the best developer conferences in the Midwest. This year the event features a single day of content and connections that will cover the latest and greatest insights about open source software, AI, and software engineering, plus Google's platforms including Gemini, Cloud, and Android.

DevFestMN has been running since 2013. Over the years, DevFestMN has grown an amazing community from around the world. DevFest invites a diverse group of participants that spans from students to industry professionals.

On the topic of open source software, I'll be talking about keeping an open source community together for over 30 years. In this talk, I'll share a brief background about DOS and FreeDOS, and review several interesting highlights over the project's 30 year history. I'll conclude with a list of lessons learned in maintaining an open source community, including how to keep people engaged, how to build interest and attract new folks from outside the community, code of conduct, license clarity, and missteps to avoid. More generally, this is about how to keep a small but dedicated open source community working together.

You can find me in the Main Auditorium at 10am.
